Text updates are done!
As of today I have finished the text updates for Chosen of Kore!
…round 1.
Yeah, probably shouldn’t have expected I’d need only one run through to update the text of this book. There are a few more things I do want to check and fix.
Here’s an incomplete list of what I fixed:
- added flavour text under the heading of each part (HEAVENS, EARTH, UNDERWORLD)
- fixed some vocabulary issues (where I used the wrong word and it wasn’t caught)
- removed some sentences that didn’t add to narrative, world, or character, and in fact detracted from them
- added bits for clarity in confusing passages
- rewrote bits for clarity in confusing passages
- tightened up dialogue tags
- fixed some inaccuracies, especially with moons and their phases
- made the Harbourtown accent less annoying to read (and write)
- removed some too-specific things where vagueness is better for me as a writer (see: not painting myself into a corner)
The difference ends up being about one hundred words between the two copies of the book. As I’ve said, the changes are not large — this is the same book as Bellica. Just…better. I hope.
But I am going to go over it again because I know I missed some things with these updates. Hopefully the second run through is faster than the first.
Chapters will still start releasing soon!
About Star of Ixchel….
Re-reading Chosen of Kore has made me realize just HOW BADLY I messed up with Star of Ixchel. I left SO many plot/character/world threads hanging, completely forgotten about. And I let other people’s opinions about how long fantasy books “should” be get into my head, and kept it far too short.
I am going to be completely rewriting book 2, from scratch. I will let it be as big as it needs to be, which will likely be the same length as Chosen of Kore (~253K). I’m going to make sure I don’t drop all those plot/character/world threads.
I think the main plot of Star of Ixchel will remain the same — the big, key events, that is. But beyond that I can’t say.
I’m actually pretty excited to get into it because I have really loved diving into this world again.
Anyway, on my next read-through/update of Chosen of Kore I’m going to make sure I make good notes on exactly what threads I need to make sure to pick up again — I’ve already got some jotted down, but don’t want to miss anything.
This is what happens when you accidentally write a series. I resisted these books being part of a series when I wrote them and the second one absolutely suffered because of that.
This re-launch was the right call. I’m so glad I’m letting myself do this. For years I maintained that I’d never go back and fix old books, and for the most part I think that’s the best stance to take…but there are always exceptions.
Anyway. Just wanted to update y’all on where I’m at with it! I’m going to get back to it now, because I’m kinda on fire.
Wildly,
Katje
